Angelita Howard, EdD, MBA

Vice President for Global and Online Learning at Meharry Medical College

About Dr. Howard

Angelita Howard is an educational pioneer, author, teacher, mentor, scholar, and servant leader. She serves as the Vice President for Global and Online Learning at Meharry Medical College. Formally, Angelita was the Founding Dean of Online Education and Expanded Programs at Morehouse School of Medicine, in Atlanta. She served as inaugural Co-Director for both the Master of Science in Biotechnology (MSBT), and more recently over the last 2 years, the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) and the Doctorate of Health Administration (DHA), which were both established under her direction. In her current role, Dr. Howard has demonstrated outstanding leadership, teaching, scholarship, and academic achievements. She has successfully launched and overseen several new online programs, including the #1 ranked MSBT. She has also developed and implemented innovative teaching methods, such as the Summer Bridge Pathway Programs, which have helped to increase diversity in the student body. In addition to her administrative and teaching responsibilities, Angelita is also an active researcher with scholarly activity. More recently, she is a certified clinical research coordinator and has extensive experience in conducting research on educational interventions. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals highlighting these research approaches and has presented her work at numerous national and international conferences. Dr. Howard is an exceptional and internationally recognized leader of graduate education and online student performance & outcomes research. She is a gifted leader and educator who can connect with students from all backgrounds. She is also a tireless advocate for students, and always willing to go the extra mile to help them succeed.

 

Dr. Howard has been a pioneer in promoting online education and has been recognized for her expertise in this field, having been invited to speak at conferences and events across the globe. She has also published several articles on topics related to diversity, health equity, and education.

 

Dr. Howard holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master’s degree in both Educational Leadership and Teaching, Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership, Master’s degree in Business Administration in Project Management, and more recently, a Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics. She is a board member of various committees at MSM such as the Institutional Effectiveness Committee, Online Oversight Committee, and Graduate Education in Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Howard also serves on external committees such as Clayton State University Alumni and the advisory boards for PFx AUC Data Science Center, and Personalized Medicine Coalition.

 

Perhaps the greatest teaching innovations accomplished by Dr. Howard are the online 2-week I-CORPS program during the summer bridge programs and the 8-week Health Science Practicums. They are more accessible to students who have busy schedules or who are unable to commit to a long, in-person program. They are delivered entirely online, which allows students from all over the world to participate. Indeed, there are students all over the world, enrolled in these courses. She has help to create a more diverse and global learning environment. These courses use a variety of novel teaching methods, such as project-based learning and case studies. This allows students to learn by doing and to apply what they learn to real-world problems. Finally, both focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. This can help students to develop the skills needed to start their own businesses or to work in innovative companies.

 

Throughout her career, Dr. Howard has been a vocal advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Women of the Year in STEAM Education Award, FECDC’s Pinnacle Leadership Award, and Georgia Bio Community Award. Her leadership and pioneering work in online education and expanding educational pipelines has a transformative impact on education at MSM and underrepresented minority groups. Dr. Howard's passion for creating a more equitable and inclusive learning environment makes her a valued leader and advocate for underrepresented communities, and her vision and dedication will continue to shape the future of education.

 

Dr. Howard has been successful in securing funding from a variety of sources, including the Ernest E. Just Foundation, Baxter International, and the Health Federally Funded Research and Development Center Operated by the MITRE Corporation. This demonstrates that her work is of high quality and that she is able to compete successfully for funding. Several of her grants are focused on increasing diversity and inclusion in the biotechnology and health informatics workforce, which demonstrates a profound commitment to making a difference in the lives of our students. Dr. Howard's funded projects have resulted in the development of new programs and initiatives.

 

The peer-reviewed journal articles published by Dr. Howard exemplify excellence in scholarly activity. Each manuscript addresses important and timely topics. These articles focus on the issue of diversity in the biotechnology sector, which is a critical graduate education issue. Specifically, the article "Diversity in the Biotechnology Sector: A First Look at the Impact of a 5-Week Intensive Program on Graduate Training and Career Outlook" is particularly noteworthy because it is the first study to examine the impact of a 5-Week Intensive Program on diversity in the biotechnology sector.

 

Over the last 2 years, Dr. Howard has made ~30 presentations and/or invited lectures at venues such as, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, the BIO International Conference, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, and HBCU White House Initiative, just to name a few. Angelita is the daughter of two amazing supportive parents, the mother to a 21-year-old college daughter who is a biology major. She’s an active member at Grace Baptist Church-Atl, a community leader and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. In her spare time, she loves to sleep and sing. Angelita recently released her book “Authentic Leadership: Navigating Success One Chapter at a Time.”
