About Rep. Walters
Representative Daryl "Joy" Walters holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, a Master of Divinity and Certificate of Black Religious History from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Master of Theology with an emphasis in Africana Religious History from Emory University Candler School of Theology. She also holds a specialized certificate from Yale University’s Women’s Campaign School.
Outside of her academic success, Joy’s life has always been dedicated to being holistically involved in her community and state. As it relates to public service, specifically, her journey began over a decade ago in 2009 through her role as a Senate Aide for the Louisiana State Legislature. Every moment since, and even prior too, Joy has remained keenly aware that she stands on the shoulders of giants and leaders, who have paved the way for her success. It is this reality that undergirds her commitment to fighting passionately on behalf of underrepresented and underserved communities throughout Louisiana and beyond.
Other leadership roles previously held by Ms. Walters include serving five years as the Vice President of Communications to the Young Democrats of Louisiana and, in 2012, being elected at only 19 years old to serve the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ms. Walters is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated and a native of Shreveport, Louisiana.
